It’s Weidert Wednesday, and high time for the Content Queens to make another guest appearance. In this episode, we’re dispensing our special brand of writerly wisdom to help you get and keep more eyes on your blog.

5 Ways to Get Your Blog Post Read

  1. Use a magnetic headline. You only get one chance to make a first impression, so don’t waste it on a snoozer headline. Write a headline that entices and motivates people in your industry to read what you have to say. Case in point: “Maintenance Requirements for Product Handling Equipment” is an invitation for readers to take a pass on your post. “4 Ways to Eliminate Downtime,” on the other hand, has some stopping power.
  1. Get to the (bullet) point. Who hasn’t been on the receiving end of a long-winded answer to a seemingly simple question? About two minutes in, you’re regretting having asked. Long, cumbersome written paragraphs have the same effect — especially when they could just as easily be summarized into shorter, digestible nuggets. In these cases, bullet points are:
  • So.
  • Much.
  • Better.
  1. Separate with subheads. Occasionally, the nuances of a topic dictate that a post run longer than a more typical “quick hit” blog. Don’t just drop knowledge on readers and run. Use subheads to organize the information, logically lead readers through the subject matter and provide visual breaks in lengthy text.
  1. Write with energy. Convey your passion! Use active phrases, inject some brand-appropriate personality into your posts and keep the pace lively — don’t get bogged down in jargon or carried away with high-brow vocabulary that impresses no one (except yourself). You can’t bore people into buying your product or service.
  1. Always, always, always provide value. You don’t repeat “always” three times and not deliver the most important point: Provide value in your posts. Give readers information or ideas they can easily apply to their business and realize some tangible benefit, like becoming more productive, mitigating risk or increasing profitability.

Take it from the Content Queens. Whether you’re promoting the most exciting event on the planet or dissecting a topic that’s as dry as toast, these five pointers will help you engage readers and get those blogs read!
